Nedbank adopts innovative approach to attracting top digital talent

Published - October 2019

Nedbank Group Technology has adopted a fresh, innovative approach to sourcing highly skilled digital talent by partnering with HackerX, the world’s largest invite-only networking and recruiting event for developers.

“Partnering with HackerX presents us with a one-of-a-kind opportunity to find and meet with some of the best digital talent available,” said Thando Lukhele, Group Technology’s Sourcing & HR Divisional Executive.

“HackerX’s rapid-interview format ensures everyone has a chance to tell their story. In addition to raising awareness of the Nedbank brand in the digital community, it enables us to get in front of qualified talent and share what we are working on in a casual environment.”

The HackerX client base spans more than 3,000 technology companies including Uber, Airbnb, Google, SpaceX, Oracle, Microsoft, Spotify and Facebook, as well as some of the world's fastest-growing start-ups.

Nedbank has already hosted two HackerX events, becoming the first financial services provider to do so, following the second event that took place on 11 July 2019 at the banks’. West Street campus in Sandton.

This year, Nedbank looked to fill a number of specialised digital roles in specialist fields ranging from Data to Development and Design, DevOps, Enterprise Quality Assurance, Agile and Architecture. At the event, 145 candidates were interviewed in 120 minutes, with a potential of 85 new hires identified.

How did you hear about Nedbank’s HackerX? And what motivated you to enter?

I found out about HackerX from an email invitation I received based on my LinkedIn Profile. I found it an interesting way to recruit people, so I was keen to come through on the day and learn more about the roles and divisions that were partaking in the event.

Tell us about your HackerX experience? What are some of your highs/lows of this experience?

My HackerX experience was great, in as much as you are being interviewed by the different business units, you are also able to get a sense of the culture – allowing a ‘recruit’ to gauge the fit and ask as many questions as they would like. The downside to this type of event is the limited time – the event is quite fast-paced, and one doesn’t have the opportunity to talk to everyone. Nonetheless, where you do get to have conversations, they can be very meaningful and possibly lead to further engagements.

How has your experience been since joining the bank?

I have had a pleasant experience overall – I’ve been here for almost a year now and I’m working on some interesting use cases with a committed team of people who make the challenges worth interesting to tackle.

Would you recommend the HackerX experience to others in your industry?

Absolutely, this is a great event where you have the opportunity to meet different teams and talk to different business units.
