PayShap is a payment method that enables you to make and receive real-time payments using an account alias (called ShapID). PayShap is supported by Absa, Al Baraka Bank, African Bank, Capitec, Discovery , FNB, HBZ Bank Limited, Investec, Nedbank, OM Bank, Standard Bank and TymeBank.

A ShapID is an easy-to-remember alias for your Nedbank account, usually your cellphone number.

If you are an individual or small business, your ShapID will be your primary cellphone number registered with Nedbank.

When you create a ShapID for the first time at any participating bank, it becomes your default ShapID. At Nedbank, your ShapID will usually be your primary cellphone number (e.g. +27 83 123 4567) but may also appear as +27 83 123 4567@Nedbank.

If you have already registered your cellphone number as a default ShapID at another bank, you cannot register it as a default ShapID at Nedbank without first deregistering it at the other bank. For example, if you registered +27 81 234 5678 at Bank A and register for PayShap at Nedbank, your ShapID will be +27 81 234 5678@Nedbank.

If you want to have a default ShapID at Nedbank, you must first deregister your cellphone number at Bank A and then register that number at Nedbank. It is important to note that in the example above, you would need to deregister the cellphone number at Bank A and deregister +27 81 234 5678@nedbank for Nedbank to recognise +27 81 234 5678 as your new default ShapID.

We are required to ensure that the cellphone number linked to your Nedbank account is owned by the same person. This verification helps protect against fraud and ensures secure transactions.

You can use your primary cellphone number (e.g. +27 81 234 5678) or cellphonenumber@Nedbank as your ShapID.

Yes. For the initial release, you can register only one ShapID per account profile. However, if you bank with multiple participating banks, you can have multiple ShapIDs – one at each bank.

During the payment process, you will be asked to confirm the recipient's details (the display name) before completing the transaction. This step helps ensure you are paying the correct person.

No. You can make PayShap payments via the Money app or Online Banking only.

Your ShapID must always match your primary cellphone number. If it doesn't, we will automatically delete the ShapID that differs from your primary cellphone number at the end of the business day. Ideally, you should delete your old ShapID yourself via the Manage ShapID option before the end of the day. Then, follow the Manage ShapID process again to activate your new ShapID, which will link your account to your new cellphone number.

PayShap transactions cannot be reversed. During the payment process, you will be asked to confirm the recipient's name before completing the transaction. It is your responsibility to ensure the correct recipient details are provided to the paying bank. Neither the paying nor the receiving bank will be liable if they acted on the information that you supplied.

Please call the Nedbank Contact Centre on 0800 555 111.

PayShap Request is a service that enables you to send and receive payment requests instantly. The request is sent in real time and, once approved, the payment is made immediately.

You can request up to R50 000 per transaction per day. Some banks may have lower limits, so it's best to confirm with the recipient.

Nedbank automatically sets the default date to 14 days from the day the request is created. You can change this to any date between today and 45 days from today.

You do not have to pay immediately, but a request must be fulfilled before its expiry date. Nedbank will keep the request in a pending state until you either accept or decline it, or until it reaches its expiry date and time.

Choose the closest reason for declining from the standard options provided.

No. Once you have declined the PayShap Request, the transaction will be closed. The requester will be notified of the declined status and the reason you selected.

Log on to the Money app, tap the PayShap widget, select PayShap Request, scroll to your recent requests, and select Sent.

Here's what the statuses mean:

  • Pending: Your request has been sent, received, and presented to the payer's bank but has not been actioned by the payer. It will remain in this status until it is paid, cancelled, or expires.
  • Expired: Your request has passed its expiry date. It is now closed and cannot be reopened.
  • Declined: The recipient declined your request. You can view the decline reason in the transaction details.

No. Once you have cancelled the PayShap Request, the transaction will be closed. The payer will be notified of the cancellation status and the reason you selected.

The PayShap limit per transaction is set to R5 000. You can adjust this limit in your profile settings.

  • You can increase the limit to R10 000 by authenticating with Approve-it.
  • For amounts greater R10 000 but less than R50 000, you will need to complete biometric authentication.

You will receive a notification stating: 'PayShap Request sent successfully'.

You will receive a SMS (if enabled) of the deposit.

Yes. When you send a PayShap Request, you can select the account to receive the money. If that account has a linked ShapID, Nedbank will use it by default.

Yes, if that number is registered as a ShapID.

There is no daily limit on the number of PayShap Requests that you can send or pay.

Decline the request. Never accept a request from an unknown person. PayShap payments cannot be reversed.

No. If the recipient hasn't linked their account to a ShapID, you will not be able to PayShap to a ShapID.

When you make a PayShap Request from your primary bank account with a linked ShapID, the payer will be asked to pay the Request to your ShapID. If you untick the check box, you override this feature and send your account number only instead of the ShapID. However, paying to a ShapID is usually much cheaper for the payer, so leaving the box ticked is recommended.
