A dormant bank account is one where no client-initiated credit or debit transactions are made for a period, normally 180 days but subject to your account type.

We will place a hold on your account, which means you won't be able to use it to pay for goods or services or withdraw funds.

Fees will continue to be charged on your account until it is closed.

If your account balance is less than R50 000, you can quickly and easily reactivate your account on the Money App by following the steps:

  • Select your inactive account from the dashboard.
  • Tap Activate.
  • If your account has a negative balance, you will need to deposit money into the account to make the balance R0.
  • Then tap Confirm to activate your account.
  • You will then see a message on the app and receive an SMS on your registered cellphone number to confirm that your account has been reactivated successfully.

Or call the Nedbank contact centre on 0800 555 111.

If your account balance exceeds R50 000 you would need to visit your nearest branch with your ID document.

Once your account has been dormant for 2 years, we will automatically close your account. If you had a positive balance in your account, these funds will be moved to unclaimed balances, and you can claim these at any time.
