How this scam works

Fraudsters pretend to be employees from well-known organisations, offering you discounted products or services (i.e. airline tickets, TV-streaming services etc.). To claim the discount offer, they ask you to download an app via a link they’ve sent you.

When you click on the link to install the app, you will be directed to approve several permissions, allowing fraudsters access to your device without your knowledge. Once they’ve gained access, they download malware onto your device, which will compromise your security.

Tips to keep safe

  • Don’t install apps from links. Install apps from official stores like the Apple App Store or Google Play only.
  • Don't ignore the warnings on your mobile device about installing apps from unknown sources.
  • Double-check unusual requests and contact the organisation to confirm if they are running a promotion.
  • Keep your antivirus software updated.
  • Be cautious of apps asking for too many permissions.

What to do if you suspect you’ve been scammed

  • Change your banking passwords immediately on another trusted device.
