How this scam works

Fraudsters pose as employees from various retail stores, offering you a ‘free’ voucher. To ‘load’ the voucher, they ask you for personal information like your ID number and to take a selfie of you.

While you think you are being registered for a voucher, the fraudsters are actually enrolling your Money app on their mobile device. They then trick you into handing them your cellphone and accept the Approve-it message for the enrolment of your Money app on their cellphone without you knowing.

The fraudsters then walk away with your banking app on their phone, and you never get the voucher.

 

How to keep safe

  • Always check with the store to ensure that they are indeed running a promotion.
  • Never share your personal information with a stranger or let them take a selfie of you.
  • Never give your phone to a stranger, not even a bank employee.
  • Read Approve-it messages carefully before accepting them. If you receive an Approve-it message for a transaction you didn’t initiate, decline it and call us immediately on 0800 110 929.
