Nedbank does not pay mere lip service to LGBTQI+ diversity and inclusion.
In an ever-changing world, the corporate landscape has transformed its approach to diversity and inclusion. Organisations around the globe are now recognising the importance of embracing diversity in all its forms. At Nedbank, our LGBTQI+ employee network is at the forefront of this transformation, championing change and driving progress. Here are some of the remarkable successes we’ve achieved on our journey towards a more inclusive workplace:
1. Adoption leave and gender inclusion policies
Our commitment to inclusivity shines through in our adoption leave and parental leave policies. By recognising and supporting the needs of LGBTQI+ employees who become parents, we not only empower our workforce but also set a standard for other employers. Our adoption leave policy wording has expanded to become inclusive and gender neutral. We’ve modernised gender-specific terms like ‘paternity leave’ and ‘commissioning surrogacy maternity leave’ by consolidating various parental scenarios under the term ‘parenthood leave’.
Additionally, we’ve included gender expression and gender identity in our code of conduct. This ensures that our employees are protected against discrimination, fostering an environment of respect and dignity for all. In an era where language matters, we encourage employees to display their pronouns in email signatures if they would like to, to prevent misgendering. This makes a world of difference for our allies, LGBTQI+ colleagues, and those with unisex names.
2. Gender-neutral bathrooms and accessibility
Supporting our belief in the importance of an inclusive and welcoming physical work environment, Nedbank has implemented gender-neutral bathrooms in addition to single-sex bathrooms on certain campuses. This demonstrates our commitment to gender diversity and a comfortable and welcoming workspace for all. In addition, we’ve placed a strong emphasis on ensuring accessibility for differently abled colleagues, recognising that inclusivity encompasses all aspects of physical infrastructure.

3. Supporting LGBTQI+ shelters
Our commitment to the LGBTQI+ community extends beyond our corporate walls. We proudly support an LGBTQI+ shelter, showcasing our dedication to making a tangible difference. Our support is not just financial – it’s a meaningful relationship that has been in operation for 2 years and will remain ongoing. By adopting the shelter as a sustainable beneficiary, we arecontributing to the betterment of LGBTQI+ lives.
4. Learning and inclusivity
Nedbank understands that a culture of learning is integral to fostering inclusivity. Our learning platform within the organisation has become a cornerstone of the programme and creates opportunities for all employees to expand their knowledge and understanding of LGBTQI+ issues. Additionally, we conduct regular education, training, and awareness sessions with various business units, ensuring that our workforce has the tools and knowledge to embrace diversity.
In a world where inclusion is no longer just a buzzword but a fundamental principle, Nedbank’s LGBTQI+ employee network is leading by example.
