How this scam works

Fraudsters send fake letters, emails and SMSs pretending to be from the South African Revenue Service (SARS). They might ask for payments into fake accounts or ask you to click on links for ‘refunds’ or to ‘action urgent demand letters’.

SARS never provides bank account numbers for payments. Use only bank-defined beneficiary details available on Online Banking and the Money app for SARS payments.

Clicking on links is risky! They take you to web pages where you are asked for your card details or digital banking username and password.

Tips to keep safe

  • SARS will never ask for your card details or digital banking username and password via links.
  • Update your personal information via the official SARS website or app using your login details.
  • Verify any requests with SARS before you share any personal information.
  • If you think that your information might have been compromised, call 0800 110 929 immediately.
