How this scam works
Fraudsters call you posing as mobile network providers, saying that your cellphone number is about to be SIM-swapped. The fraudsters request you to do a Send money transaction to your cellphone number and to share the cash voucher PIN with them. Once you share the cash voucher PIN, they withdraw the money immediately.
Tip to keep safe
- Your cellphone service provider will never ask you to do a Send money transaction or make a payment to prevent or reverse a fraudulent SIM swap.
- If you receive a call about a SIM swap on your number, ask that it be cancelled. Don’t perform any transactions. If you’re unsure, call your cellphone service provider to confirm the call.
- A voucher code and PIN are the same as cash – if you share this information with anyone, they can redeem the voucher.
- Protect your personal information and don’t share it with anyone.
