A budget is essential

We all know that we need to budget, but it's not always easy. And if you don't know where to begin, it is even harder. Having a budget is always better than having none. Sticking to a budget is more difficult if you're already struggling financially. But take courage – it will help you.

Preparing a budget can be stressful, but failing to create a budget can be even more so.

What is a budget?

A budget is a list that compares your income with your expenses. It shows how you will spend your money for the month or week after you have been paid. It details your current financial situation and helps you track and manage your spending.

Steps to prepare a budget

  1. Review and set your financial goals.
  2. Add all the money you earn and check your current financial position.
  3. Prepare a budget for 12 months. List every expense and how much you'll need for each item. Itemise each category and estimate realistic figures.
  4. Make sure your expenses are not more than your income. Look at things you can change.
  5. Work out how much you will have left and how much you can save.
  6. See how long it will take you to reach your financial goals. Check your plan often and adjust if needed.
