Claims will be paid to the nominated beneficiaries and/or cessionaries. All funeral claims will be paid to the main member.

If you, a beneficiary, or a cessionary disagrees with the outcome of a claim, the claim must be disputed in writing to claims@nedbankinsurance.co.za within 6 months of the outcome being known. It the outcome is not disputed within this time, the rights to potential benefits may be forfeited.

If an insured person changes jobs or starts or stops smoking, you must let us know in writing within 60 days of the event, as it may affect the cover and premium amounts. If you do not let us know and we become aware of this information only after a claim has been submitted, we may take the following actions:

  1. Decline the claim or recover any amounts that have already been paid.
  2. Recover the difference between the premium paid and the premium that you would have paid from the claim amount.

If an insured person commits suicide within 12 months of the start date of the policy, the claim will not be paid and premiums that have already been paid will not be refunded. The benefit may be claimed 12 months after the policy start date on condition that the policy premiums are up to date. This exclusion also applies after a policy reinstatement or an increase in cover amounts.

If an insured person dies within 24 months after cover has started as a result of any condition, physical defect, illness, bodily injury, or disability of which they were aware or for which they received medical advice or treatment during the 24 months before the start date of the policy, or the date of any reinstatement or increase in cover, the claim will not be paid and premiums that have already been paid will not be refunded.

Should you or an insured person die, your or their nominated beneficiaries or estate executors (claimants) must let us know by calling us on 0800 333 111 during office hours or emailing us at claims@nedbankinsurance.co.za within 180 days from the date of your or the insured person's death. If they do not notify us within 180 days, it may affect the outcome of the claim.

The cover amount we pay will depend on the premiums you have paid for the previous 6 months. If we did not receive the full premium amounts, we will divide the premium amount that we received over the past 6 months by the premium amount that was actually due and multiply it with the cover amount to calculate the cover amount.

Example

Cover amount: R10 000

Monthly premium: R100 (R600 for 6 months)

The premium amount that you paid over 6 months: R500

Calculation: (R500/R600) x R10 000 = R8 333.33

This means you will be covered for R8 333.33 only and not for R10 000.

  1. The death certificate.
  2. A BI-1663/DHA-1663 form (notification of death) from the Home Affairs office.
  3. The valid ID of the deceased. If the deceased is younger than 18, we will need their full birth certificate.
  4. A certified copy of the claimant's valid ID.
  5. A completed claim form (provided by Nedbank Insurance).
  6. A burial order – invoice or receipt for the funeral.
  7. A certified copy of your or the beneficiary’s bank statements for 1 month.
  8. Declaration by the police (provided by Nedbank Insurance in the event of an unnatural death only).
